The Israeli/USA attack on Iran and the Iranian response is already starting to hit the so-called “safe haven” image of the Gulf States. Missiles/drones hitting luxury high rise condos, hotels, airports and ports is never a good look for property developers, airlines or airport/port operators.
Should this war drag on/worsen and should regime change fail in Iran, I suspect future flows of capital seeking long term safety (e.g. for property purchases etc) will instead be flowing east to safer havens in SE Asia (Singapore, etc.), Sri Lanka (Colombo seems to be developing more and more) and Mauritius along with the Southern Cone of South America.
It also means that airlines like Emirates and Qatar that many travellers use to fly between Europe and Asia/Australia that transit the Gulf States (Malaysia based discount airline Air Asia is launching a KL-Bahrain-London route this summer) will also take a hit. This could benefit Türk Hava Yolları (IST: THYAO) or Turkish Airlines or any other airline [e.g. Singapore Airlines (SGX: C6L / FRA: SIA1 / OTCMKTS: SINGY / SINGF) or Chinese etc airlines that can still fly over Russia] that can avoid having a stopover in a war zone.
I am fairly certain Middle East stock markets [Dubai Financial Market PJSC (DFM: DFM) / Boursa Kuwait Securities Company KPSC (KSE: BOURSA) / Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TLV: TASE / OTCMKTS: TVAVF) / Saudi Tadawul Group Holding (TADAWUL: 1111)] are going to be closed at least for the next few days; but our Africa & Middle East Stock Index has a growing list of Middle East stocks (albeit it might still be difficult for the average retail investor to access these markets with Interactive Brokers, etc) that will benefit when peace returns.
I will also try to get a February post [e.g. 🌐 Emerging Market Stock Picks (January 2026)] that might add to that growing list out by the end of this week…

🌏 EM debt sees rising appeal in Asia amid global shifts (The Asset) 🗃️
Asset class snaps three years of outflows as investors diversify from US assets and seek better yield
In a landscape marked by volatile currencies and mounting US fiscal concerns, emerging-market ( EM ) debt is rapidly gaining traction as a favoured asset class among Asian investors.
“This is the first time in my professional career that I remember when every part of the globe is interested in EM debt,” says Boston-based Katrina Uzun, institutional portfolio manager at MFS Investment Management, in an online interview with The Asset as part of her Asian tour.
“We’ve had three consistent years of outflows – 2022, 2023 and 2024 – and then last year ( 2025 ) was the first year of inflows into the asset class back into hard-currency and local-currency debt, and those inflows continue year to date in the beginning of this year.”
According to Uzun, this surge represents a pivotal shift, with clients across the region reallocating funds away from traditional safe havens like US treasuries and towards EM debt. But while noting that this is part of a broader global trend, she stresses that Asia’s focus on both hard- and local-currency debt signals a strategic pivot towards diversification and yield.
🇯🇵 Japan is waking up — the most under-owned developed market in the world (Public Markets)
In March 2023, the Tokyo Stock Exchange did something unusual for a stock exchange: it sent a formal warning letter to every company listed on its Prime and Standard markets. The message was blunt. Either publish a concrete plan to improve your return on capital and your stock price, or be publicly listed as a company refusing to reform.
In Japan, “name and shame” is a powerful weapon in a corporate culture where reputation matters as much as results. The response was massive. By end-2024, more than 90% of Prime segment companies had published their plans. This wasn’t greenwashing — concrete measures followed.
Here’s what changed:
🇨🇳 Analysis: Can Monetizing State Assets Ease China’s Local Debt Strain? (Caixin) $
Chinese local governments are turning to monetizing state-owned assets and resources as part of debt-resolution efforts — a sign that liquidity pressure remains even as official moves have reduced risks tied to hidden debt.
The approach, publicly highlighted by Hubei province in October, seeks to unlock value from dormant state holdings. These range from land and infrastructure to public-sector assets and data. The proceeds can help ease funding pressure, including among local government financing vehicles that continue to face debt risks.

In Depth: China’s Mutual Fund Industry Faces Overhaul After a Banner 2025 (Caixin) $
After several difficult years for many Chinese investors, 2025 delivered a surge in mutual fund returns. The industry’s scale swelled to above 37 trillion yuan ($5.4 trillion) and, in a technology-led bull market, nearly 95% of funds operating for the full year reported returns.
But to define 2025 by returns alone would be to underestimate its significance. It was also a landmark year for regulation, headlined by the China Securities Regulatory Commission’s May 7 release of an action plan for the development of mutual funds. The plan and its subsequent measures aim to force a fundamental change in the industry, “pushing the mutual fund industry to transform from a focus on scale to a focus on returns,” according to a financial analyst.
🇨🇳 China Insurers May Channel $145 Billion Into Stocks in 2026 (Caixin) $
Chinese insurers could invest around 1 trillion yuan ($145 billion) in public equities this year, analysts said, extending a surge in stock allocations encouraged by regulators seeking to bolster capital markets.
Official data show insurance investment assets rose to 38.5 trillion yuan at the end of last year. Holdings of stocks and securities investment funds jumped 38.9% to 5.7 trillion yuan, lifting their allocation to 15.4% of the total — the highest level since mid-2022.
🇨🇳 Analysis: Why China Is Moving to Shore Up Insurance Giants (Caixin) $
China is reportedly preparing to inject up to 200 billion yuan ($29 billion) into its largest state-controlled insurers through special sovereign bonds — a move that, if confirmed, would mark the first time Beijing has used the fiscal tool to recapitalize insurance companies.
The plan has not been announced, and the final amount remains unclear. But Li Yunze, head of the National Financial Regulatory Administration, signaled in May 2025 that capital replenishment for major insurers had been “placed on the agenda.”
🇨🇳 In Depth: China’s Sweeping Banking Law Rewrite Targets Hidden Risks (Caixin) $
China is proposing the most significant overhaul of banking law in over two decades with a sweeping reform designed to better control risks simmering inside its 480 trillion yuan ($69 trillion) banking system.
The proposed changes would give regulators a powerful new arsenal to police not just banks, but the entire banking ecosystem, including secretive shareholders, wayward employees and complicit auditors.
🇨🇳 U.K. Proposes Easing Audit Rules to Attract Chinese Listings (Caixin) $
The U.K.’s accounting watchdog has proposed easing audit requirements for Chinese companies seeking listings in London, in a bid to lower regulatory barriers and bolster the British capital’s competitiveness as a global financial center.
The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) on Monday released a consultation paper outlining revisions that would allow Chinese firms listing on the London Stock Exchange through the Shanghai-London Stock Connect to use Chinese auditing standards. Under existing rules, those companies must comply with International Standards on Auditing (ISAs).

🇨🇳 China Regulators Summon Trip.com, Alibaba Units Over Lending Practices (Caixin) $
China’s top financial and market regulators have summoned six major online travel platforms, including global booking giant rip.com (NASDAQ: TCOM) and Alibaba (NYSE: BABA)s mapping unit AMap, ordering them to rectify irregularities in their consumer-lending businesses.
The National Financial Regulatory Administration, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the People’s Bank of China called in the companies Friday, just ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday travel rush. Also summoned were Tongcheng Travel Holdings (HKG: 0780), Fliggy, Umetrip and Qunar.
The move marks the latest effort by Beijing to tighten oversight of so-called “assistant lending,” a model in which internet platforms leverage their vast user traffic to channel borrowers to banks and consumer-finance firms. Loans are often embedded into routine transactions such as booking flights or hotels.

We first invested in Plover Bay Technologies (HKG: 1523 / OTCMKTS: PBTDF), “Plover Bay”) in 2017, when its market cap was around USD 142 million, well before we launched our Substack in 2022. Plover Bay has had a formidable run (market cap of USD 1.22 billion today) – manufacturing routers and sells subscriptions for always-on 5G connectivity at a time when IoT and Starlink have taken off.
In that time, Plover Bay has done what it said it would do: grow revenues, expand margins, and hand back the excess. FY25 was no different on the financial front. 🇲🇴 Macau had nearly 1.56mln visitors in the 9 days of mainland’s Chinese New Year break (GGRAsia)
Macau received just under 1.56 million visitors in the full nine days of the Chinese New Year holiday season designated by authorities on the Chinese mainland, the main source market for the city’s tourists.
🇲🇴 Macau average daily arrivals during Chinese New Year break hit record: MGTO (GGRAsia)
Both the average daily and single-day visitor arrivals during the nine-day period of the Chinese New Year holiday season this year, reached a new high since official record-keeping started for this holiday break. That is according to a Tuesday press release issued by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
Preliminary figures show that Macau received just over 1.55 million visitors during the holiday period. The daily average of visitors topped 173,000 during the festive season, up 5.5 percent from the comparable period a year earlier, and “exceeded the level” seen in 2019, at 171,702, said the tourism office.
🇲🇴 Feb Macau GGR may rise 1pct y-o-y, while CNY wagers up 17pct in survey: Citi (GGRAsia)
Banking institution Citigroup says Macau’s February gross gaming revenue (GGR) may rise 1 percent year-on-year, even as its latest table betting survey covering Chinese New Year (CNY) showed a 17-percent year-on-year increase in total wager observed, versus the festive period in 2025.
Analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau wrote in an update, referring to the Chinese zodiac symbol for the latest lunar year: “Macau is set to gallop into the Year of the Horse with strong premium mass.”
They also noted: “The data points we collected make us comfortable with our February GGR forecast of MOP20.0 billion [US$2.48 billion].”
That would represent 1 percent year-on-year growth, “implying solid 12 percent year-on-year growth for January and February combined,” said the institution.
🇲🇴 February casino GGR up 4.5pct y-o-y amid CNY break: Macau govt (GGRAsia)
Casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau rose 4.5 percent year-on-year in February to MOP20.63 billion (US$2.56 billion), according to data released on Sunday by the city’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau.
February encompassed the latest Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday season. Chinese New Year fell on February 17 this time, and the Chinese mainland – Macau’s main tourism feeder market – had a nine-day holiday from February 15 to February 23 inclusive.
February’s result was down 8.9 percent sequentially compared to January’s MOP22.63 billion.
JP Morgan Securities (Asia Pacific) Ltd suggested in a note in late February that the holiday period “kicked off sluggishly, with the first four to five days running at circa MOP450 million per day”
Citigroup said in a memo after a holiday survey of Macau floors, that it had observed a wagering volume that was circa 17 percent higher than the previous Chinese New Year holiday period.
🇲🇴 Galaxy Ent 4Q EBITDA at nearly US$550mln, flags final 2025 dividend (GGRAsia)
Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment (HKG: 0027 / OTCMKTS: GXYEF) reported fourth-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of just under HKD4.30 billion (US$549.2 million). The result was up 32.7 percent from the prior-year period.
Galaxy Entertainment also announced a final dividend of HKD0.80 per share, to be paid on June 12. During 2025, the company paid two dividends of HKD0.50 and HKD0.70, totalling HKD1.20 per share.
Fourth-quarter net revenue rose by 22.5 percent from a year earlier, to HKD13.83 billion.
🇲🇴 Galaxy Ent eager to tap overseas-casino opportunities, with Japan a ‘very attractive proposition’: Francis Lui (GGRAsia)
Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment (HKG: 0027 / OTCMKTS: GXYEF) would consider revisiting the idea of a casino-resort investment overseas, should a “suitable project” emerge, says its chairman Francis Lui Yiu Tung (pictured, centre left). He was speaking during a Thursday press briefing, following the company’s release of its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 financial results.
In responding to media questions, Mr Lui was non-committal about where such an overseas opportunity might come. Though he did say that Japan – due to launch a fresh application round for local governments in 2027 – would be a “really good market” to be in.
Mr Lui stated: “In Macau we believe…that we are doing quite well, the question being whether we can step onto the global stage.”

🇲🇾 S&P downgrades Empire Resorts’ rating, expects Genting to provide further support (GGRAsia)
Loss-making United States-based casino business Empire Resorts Inc, affiliated with global gaming group Genting Malaysia (KLSE: GENM OTCMKTS: GMALY / GMALF), has had its long-term issuer credit rating downgraded to ‘B’, from ‘B+’, by S&P Global Ratings, on “rising refinancing risk”.
“The negative rating outlook reflects the rising refinancing risk related to Empire’s bond maturing in November 2026,” the ratings agency stated in a Wednesday report.
That US$300-million bond is due in November 2026, the institution said.
“We believe the U.S.-based gaming operator’s cash flows and liquidity will be significantly strained, absent a timely and successful refinancing,” it added.
S&P also said ongoing support from Genting Malaysia “will bolster Empire’s liquidity”.
🇲🇾 Genting Malaysia back to profit in 4Q, though Genting Highlands revenue down (GGRAsia)
Casino group Genting Malaysia (KLSE: GENM OTCMKTS: GMALY / GMALF) registered a net profit attributable to its shareholders of MYR145.9 million (US$37.5 million) in the fourth quarter of 2025, from a net loss of MYR457.9 million in the prior year, it said in a Thursday filing to Bursa Malaysia.
That was amid quarterly revenue in the leisure and hospitality segment in the key market of Malaysia – including gaming at its Resorts World Genting casino complex (pictured) – recording a 2.5 percent year-on-year decline, to MYR1.73 billion.
“The softer performance” in Malaysia “was mainly due to lower overall business volumes in the gaming segment at Resorts World Genting and certain one-off expenses relating to payroll and contractual obligations,” said the firm in a press release with the results.
Maybank Investment Bank Bhd said in a Friday note that Genting Malaysia’s results and dividends “were below” its expectations.
🇲🇾 RGB 4Q revenue down nearly 70pct from a year earlier, firm declares dividend (GGRAsia)
Malaysian casino equipment supplier and distributor RGB International Bhd (KLSE: RGB) reported a fourth-quarter profit attributable to its shareholders of nearly MYR5.6 million (US$1.4 million), down from MYR31.5 million from the prior-year period.
The company reported revenue of just under MYR108.9 million for three months to December 31, down 69.5 percent from a year ago, according to a Thursday filing to Bursa Malaysia.
RGB said in Thursday’s filing that it “remains cautiously optimistic” over its outlook for the financial year ending 2026.
“Performance across the regional gaming industry is expected to be influenced by regulatory developments, macroeconomic conditions, consumer spending patterns and tourism trends within the group’s principal markets of the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam,” said the company.

🇵🇭 Int Ent shareholders nod deal that will give a majority stake for DigiPlus (GGRAsia)
Shareholders in Hong Kong-listed International Entertainment Corporation (HKG: 1009) on Thursday approved a deal for Philippine-listed online gaming provider DigiPlus Interactive (PSE: PLUS) to subscribe to up to HKD1.6 billion (US$204.5 million) in convertible notes with a five-year maturity and 3 percent yearly interest.
Once fully converted, the notes would give DigiPlus a 53.89 percent stake in International Entertainment based on the enlarged share capital, affirmed Thursday’s filing.
The deal will provide DigiPlus a foothold in the Philippines’ land-based casino sector as International Entertainment controls the New Coast Hotel Manila. The complex has a provisional casino gaming licence from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor).
Soon after the deal was announced in November last year, Eusebio Tanco, DigiPlus’ chairman, said controlling a land-based casino operation in Manila would contribute to the group’s long-term success.

🇸🇬 Genting Singapore 2025 net profit down 32.6pct, but Lim Kok Thay hails transition year (GGRAsia)
Genting Singapore (SGX: G13 / FRA: 36T / OTCMKTS: GIGNF / GIGNY), controller of Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), posted annual net profit amounting to just over SGD390.3 million (US$308.2 million) for 2025, down 32.6 percent from 2024.
That was on revenue that fell 3.1 percent year-on-year, to SGD2.45 billion, according to unaudited results filed to the Singapore Exchange and published on Tuesday by the firm.
The firm noted that gaming revenue had been “impacted by a lower win rate,” while “non-gaming revenue strengthened in the second half of the year as newly refreshed attractions and hospitality offerings enhanced guest engagement and lifted overall resort activity”.
🇸🇬 Genting Singapore year-end ‘not good’ and 2025 results ‘underwhelmed’: analysts (GGRAsia)
The fourth quarter for Genting Singapore (SGX: G13 / FRA: 36T / OTCMKTS: GIGNF / GIGNY), which runs the Resorts World Sentosa casino complex in Singapore, was “really, not good,” said a Tuesday note from banking group JP Morgan, adding that the firm’s gaming market share “sank to an all-time low”. It followed the posting of Genting Singapore’s full-year and second-half results to the Singapore Exchange.
Genting Singapore had announced annual net profit of just over SGD390.3 million (US$308.2 million), down 32.6 percent from 2024, though Genting boss Lim Kok Thay had said in a press release that 2025 was a “defining transition year”.
Maybank Research Pte Ltd nonetheless said there had been a “weak end” to 2025 for the casino firm, and that full-year 2025 results had “underwhelmed”.

🌐 Global dividends hit record US$2.09 trillion in 2025 (The Asset) 🗃️
Projection for 2026 is 5.4% topline payout growth, with new record of US$2.20 trillion
Global dividends reached a new annual record of US$2.09 trillion in 2025, up 7.0% year-on-year on a topline basis, according to a recent report.

🌐 Burford Capital – back from the dead? (Undervalued Shares)
I have a semi-successful track record covering Burford Capital Limited (NYSE: BUR) (ISIN GG00BMGYLN96, UK:BUR and NYSE:BUR).
After publishing an extensive research report in 2022, the stock went on to double. Unfortunately, a subsequent setback erased those gains, and the share price returned to its starting point.
For those unfamiliar with this unique animal of a company, Burford Capital is the world’s largest provider of litigation finance. It funds lawsuits in exchange for a share of the proceeds.
Much of the share price volatility has been driven by a single case: “YPF” – long considered the crown jewel of the portfolio.

🌐 Petrodollar 2.0: Why Russia’s Dollar Pivot Could Crash Gold And Silver (Seeking Alpha) $ 🗃️
Silver and gold face a potential short-term sell-off if Russia returns to settling oil in U.S. Dollars, unwinding the de-dollarization trade premium.
A successful Putin-Trump peace deal would strengthen the dollar and catalyze U.S. energy majors Exxon Mobil and Chevron via renewed Russian access.
I plan to take profits on a war-driven metals spike, then aggressively buy miners like WPM and MTA during a peace-induced metals reset.
Despite near-term volatility, I remain long-term bullish on silver, gold, and uranium due to structural deficits, global debt risks, and persistent Eastern demand.
